i had the opportunity earlier this spring to collaborate with my close friend and phenomenal fellow artist jake vogds. though documentation doesn’t quite do justice to the experience we created, it’s a start. the exterior of the structure is a larger than life box covered in ominous black fabric; nothing about the space’s contents is revealed from the outside. this photo is from the inside of the phone booth-like structure we created, the base and ceiling are 4′ x 4′ pieces of mirror, with 7′ of vertical space in between. the structure is made of wood and mirror, and in it is a 7′ tall tree created using mixed media, that, when met with the mirror at its base and top, create the illusion of a seamless tree with no roots and no branches, just stretching up and down for eternity. the sides are painted sky, and with the mirrors, creates a black hole effect; it has you stuck in a moment of infinity, in a portal leading to nowhere, between the threads of reality, which is shown through the vertical threads running vertically around the entire capsule, as well as the peeling of the fabric of time in order to enter the space. i will work on producing a video to provide a more thorough documentation of this piece; needless to say, jake and i will undoubtedly be working together more in the future!

this is a commission piece i did as a surprise for my uncle chuck and aunt kathy, celebrating their joint 60th birthdays. there is nothing more important to them than their family, so painting them a portrait of their two grandchildren was a really neat thing to do. new life seems to be a beautiful perk of growing up. happy birthday to an amazing aunt and uncle !
